Lap Band Surgery Or A 500 Calorie Diet?

If you are contemplating lap band surgery then you might well be encouraged by the results of an Australian study which reported that, in a controlled test, lap band surgery proved to be far more effective in the long term than a very restrictive 500 calorie diet. However, before you rush off to your surgeon, you might just like to take a moment to examine the study closely.
The study involved a total of 80 patients half of whom were given lap band surgery and half of whom were put on a very low calorie diet of just 500 calories.
After six months both groups were showing similar results and had lost about fourteen percent of their starting weight. However, at the end of two years the results for the two groups looked very different.
The lap band surgery patients had lost about twenty two percent of their starting weight and showed a marked improvement in their health and quality of life. By contrast, the dieting group had re-gained much of the weight they lost in the first few months of their diet and, on average, were only just over five percent below their starting weight.
This result would seem to confirm what many people, including most doctors, already know and this is that dieting, other than to lose the odd pound or two now and again, really doesn't work. It would also appear to make a strong case for gastric banding.
Lap band surgery is one of several options open to patients as a solution to the problem of morbid obesity and is generally only considered once a patient's BMI reaches 40. Exceptions can be made and lap banding offered to patients with a BMI as low as 35, but this is normally only done when the patient is also suffering from a potentially life threatening medical condition which is linked to being overweight. For the majority of patients this means that lap band surgery would normally be considered at the point at which they are about 100 pounds overweight.
In the case of this study however the patients chosen for the study were just 50 pounds overweight. So, can we really rely on these results when this is not the target group to which lap band surgery would normally be applied?
The truth of the matter is of course that lap band surgery can be very effective in cases of morbid obesity and is proving to be a very popular choice with many patients. As with all forms of obesity treatment however it is vitally important that we collect sound data so that the various different methods can be evaluated and patients given accurate advice on which they can base their treatment decisions.
Studies of this nature certainly do not add to the base of knowledge which we need to be building and have more to do with grant funding from a lap band manufacturer than they do with any desire to advance the treatment of obesity.
Of course that is only the writer's view and you may well disagree.

Mesothelioma Treatment: Surgery

Surgery is an important step in confirming and knowing the nature of the cancer. It can be conducted on patients with the combination of adjuvant chemotherapies and radiations, before and after the surgery.

Pleurectomy:
The most common surgery for Mesothelioma treatment is pleurectomy, in which doctors open the patient's chest and remove the excessive fluid or tumor from the lining of the lungs (pleura). Although this procedure controls the accumulation of fluid and decreases pain, it still is not a cure. On the other hand, if the tumor is in its initial form and has not extensively grown, a pleurectomy can increase the survival rate of a patient when combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Additionally, a pleurectomy can be performed on patients with less-approving health conditions and has lower mortality rate than the extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP):
Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) is an invasive and severe form of surgery conducted on patients with Mesothelioma. In this treatment, parts of the lungs, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (lining of the heart) and the hemi-diaphragm, along with the tumor cells, are removed. It decreases the progression of Mesothelioma, while allowing a patient to breathe smoothly. It is usually conducted on patients with early stages of the cancer and when the tumor is in chest cavity. EPP is recommended for patients with good heart and lungs conditions, in order to endure the severities of the post-operative term. Though the surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation gives promising results, it does not guarantee a cure. Researches have shown that patients treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy and therapies have a medium life span of 35 months after the surgery, compared to only 9 months of pleurectomy. Still, some doctors question the surgery for its high risks, which include internal bleeding, blood clotting, pneumonia, amassing of pus, respiratory failure and even death. Thus, many surgeons recommend the idea of pleurectomy instead of the technically complicated EPP.

Thoracentesis:
A minor surgery is often conducted on patients who cannot undergo EPP or pleurectomy, called thoracentesis. In thoracentesis, a thoracic surgeon inserts a needle into a patient's chest to remove the excessive fluid built up in the lining of the lungs (pleura). This method neither cures nor decreases the cancer, but rather alleviate the painful symptoms of Mesothelioma. In some cases, talc or other agents are infused into a patient's chests to scar the chest wall and help them breathe properly without letting the tumor to increase, to some extent.

Paracentesis:
Paracentesis is a similar method of using a needle to extract fluid, but from the abdominal section of the body. It follows the same procedure of extracting fluid from the lining of the stomach or other abdominal organs. Patients with peritoneal Mesothelioma can benefit from paracentesis surgery.

Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery - Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

First let's find out what shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis is? There are several other names that this can be called. Some are known as tennis shoulder, pitcher's shoulder and even a shoulder impingement. These are all common names for a very similar problem.
So what is it? Shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis is the inflammation and can be an irritation and swelling of the tendons of the shoulder. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket type joint. The top part of the arm bone (humerus) forms a joint with the shoulder blade (scapula). The rotator cuff holds the head of the humerus into the scapula.
What is the most common cause of rotator cuff tendonitis?
A lot of the time the problem occurs with sports. Inflammation of the tendons of the shoulder muscles occur in sports using the arm being moved over the head repeatedly. Such sports are tennis, baseball (pitching mainly) swimming and even lifting weights over the head. What happens sometimes is you get the inflammation or injury and can cause the tendons of the rotator cuff to tear. Sometimes this occurs in people over 40 years of age.
Some of the symptoms
Pain when the arm is moved
Arm is weak when rising over your head
Pain in shoulder at night, especially when lying on the affected shoulder.
Pain in arm when performing overhead activities
How to find out if you have shoulder tendonitis?
X-ray's or MRI. X-ray's can show a burn spur. The MRI can show the inflammation in the rotator cuff. There could also be a tear in the rotator cuff and the MRI will show this.
Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery
Before shoulder tendonitis surgery, you should try physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff. If the pain is too great to start physical therapy a steroid injection (cortisone) may reduce pain and inflammation enough to start effective therapy.
If there is a tear in the rotator cuff or therapy has not helped and symptoms persist, shoulder surgery may be necessary. For most shoulder surgery, this can be accomplished with arthroscopic surgery. This type of surgery is effective in removing the bone spur and inflamed tissue around the shoulder.
You can also treat small tears with shoulder tendonitis surgery and arthroscopic surgery. There are even some new techniques that allow even large tears to be repaired with arthroscopic surgery. Now there are some large tears that are going to require open surgery to repair the torn tendon.
Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery Expectations
Once the shoulder tendonitis surgery is completed and the bone spur or tear has been repaired arthroscopic ally, you can expect the use of the shoulder to pre-injury levels. The activities that you performed prior to the injury should be able to perform them once again.
There are a couple of factors in determining the success of the shoulder tendonitis surgery. People with tears of their rotator cuff that have had the shoulder tendonitis surgery (arthroscopic) will do well. It will depend upon the size and the duration of the tear. The age of the patient will also have a bearing on the outcome and what the pre-injury level of function was.
So there are some things that you can do and the success of the shoulder tendonitis surgery should have a successful outcome in most cases. In another article I will discuss the rehabilitation of shoulder tendonitis surgery.

Usui's Reiki and Psychic Surgery

Reiki is a gentle but powerful form of healing. When Psychic Surgery is added to it, Reiki turns into "Miracle Healing".
There are basically two different forms of Psychic Surgery
1- The one practised by most Western Psychic Surgeons
2- The one practised by gifted healers such as the famous Filipino Psychic Surgeons. These are also known as "Bare Hand Surgeons"
Western Psychic Surgery and Reiki explained
All Western Psychic Surgery I have witnessed or heard of in the UK is bloodless. The surgeon works on the etheric body (the aura). He does not penetrate the skin or the bones and does not remove physical matters from within the body.
In my Reiki Masters course, I teach this form of Psychic surgery based on Reiki and on my experience gained from Filipino Bare Hand Surgeons. I have been visiting these surgeons in the Philippines since 1997. I am now able to combine the experience of both Western and Asian forms of surgery into a very powerful method of healing.
The method I teach is simple:
1- Use both the Reiki Master symbol and the Power symbol on your hands to energise them.
2- You may want to protect yourself with the Power symbol by drawing it in front of you
3- Say a prayer or request to your guide(s) to channel you for this Psychic Surgery operation.
4- Elongate your fingers by pulling on them and extending them by a few inches whilst inhaling and making a "wind" noise between your lips
5- Draw an Usui's Master symbol on your finger's extension
6- Ask what is or intuitively "see" the problem inside your client's body - if you cannot see, ask the client to describe the problem with questions such as: Where is it? what shape? What colour? What consistence? etc.. until you have a perfect view of what the problem is
7- Operate using your extended fingers: visualise these extensions going inside the client's body and removing blockages, tumours, draining pus, cleaning etc.. you may, for this exercise use whatever etheric tool you need such as lasers, knife, chisel, hammer, magic fluid etc..
8- Communicate with your Clent during the operation. Keep asking them what they feel and tell them what you feel yourself.
9- Keep the operation going until you feel you have completely removed, cleaned or unblocked the problem
To make sure this is working, you must be convinced that the surgery will work otherwise you are wasting your time. You must visualise without doubting and "know" the person is going to get better. Keep repeating to yourself many times something like "the tumour is melting" or "this xxxx is disappearing" and believe it.
The above has brought miracle cures to many of my clients. Having said this, unless the cause of a problem is removed, the problem may keep coming back. This is the topic of another one of my articles on "Cancer - Causes of disease".
Bare Hand Surgery, as practised in the Philippines, explained
Basically, a Bare Hand Surgeon enters a person's body using his / her Bare Hands and manually removes diseased or dead tissues, tumours, energy blockages, calcium deposits and other matters that should not be there. This is done without inflicting any pain, coming out without leaving any visible marks or scars.
I have personally been visiting Bare Hand Surgeons with groups in the Philippines since 1997 and I have witnessed thousands of these surgeries. I have worked with over 30 surgeons but I have only kept 3 which, I believe, are genuine. I caught the others cheating or they lacked honesty.
Psychic Surgery is impossible some say? Possibly, but this is only a scientific point of view. I do not understand how telepathy works but I accept it. Many police forces around the world use mediums to catch criminals. Their success rate is high. This is not very scientific but it works. "Remote viewers" have been shown many times on TV and it was proved that these people could see through the eyes of another person who was miles away. How does this all work? It does not matter. What matters is that it works.
"What conditions can be treated?
The following only represents a few examples of conditions I have personally seen treated by the Bare Hand Surgeons I have visited:
* Several years ago, Bare Hand Surgery was successfully performed on a friend of mine suffering from Parkinson's disease. This successfully stopped the progression of the disease for many years (this gentleman never worked on the cause and the problem eventually came back).
* Recently, a Psychic surgeon cleared "growths" from around my prostate. He then left a Kleenex tissue inside my body overnight to prevent the seeping of blood back in the testicles (I could feel the tissue by pressing on the point where it was inserted).
* I had a 12" tumour removed from my large intestines. I was eating a normal meal half an hour latter.
* A member of our group had her ovaries and fallopian tubes "cleaned" .
* The eyes of a person suffering from cataract where "cleaned"
* One member of our group had growths that were attached to her spine removed. This lady had had problems moving her head fully and had suffered from chronic pains in her shoulders for many years. The instant improvement to the head was obvious and her shoulder pains have now completely disappeared. Months of physical therapy had previously had very little impact.
* I witnessed two different Bare Hand Surgeons successfully remove deep brain tumours from two different patients.
* Another Bare Hand Surgeon cleared a "goitre" from a gentleman's throat
* One surgeon removed numerous tumours from a patient's reproductive organs who was suffering from terminal cancer. This person is now feeling alright
* One surgeon cleaned the arteries of a patient around his heart
etc.. etc.. the list is too long to mention.
Basically, Bare Hand Surgeons do not specialise in any specific disease. They work with "energy" on everything presented to them (as long as their guides allow it).
Can success be guaranteed?
There is no implied or explicit guarantee by ethical healers or myself for this form of Alternative Therapies.
Is Bare Hand Surgery fake or real?
Each time a film is shown on Bare Hand Surgery, it portrays the procedure as being some act of magic. The interesting thing is that the people who perform the magic, or those who ask them to perform it, have never been to the Philippines and have never witnessed the surgery themselves. They ridicule something they have never seen because they don't understand it.
Testing the Bare Hand Surgery
To test a "surgeons" who claims to be a Bare Hand Surgeon, I set up the following test for them.
1- They must work with short sleeve shirts
2- They have to work on a couch or bed I have first inspected to make sure nothing was hidden
3- They must show me their hands just before the surgery and start operating without touching anything
If they can still generate blood and matters from inside the body, they have past my first test
The other tests come with the working on clients over a period of time and the recovery of the client.
I was asked to feel a person's tumour before the surgery. It was rolling under my index finger. After the surgery was performed, the tumour was no longer there. Other members of my group felt the same.
Finally, when I take a group to the Philippines, my students are able to film the surgery. The surgeon is then surrounded by camera from the right, the left, the front, the back and sometimes even from above if somebody dares climb on a chair to film. Since 1997, and thousands of surgery later, nobody in my group has ever caught one of the surgeon I visit cheating.
To me, a few Bare Hand Surgeons in the Philippines are genuine and many are fake.

One: Schlep down to the nearest surgeon, and ask a complete stranger to illustrate how you would look with upgraded parts.
Two: Stay home (or stay at the office). Log onto the Internet and download "morphing" software. Then, scan in a picture of yourself and point-and-click your way to a new you. The Web site will then direct you to a local physician.
The latter option renders shopping for plastic surgery less embarrassing. Only if you are pleased with what you would look like do you go talk to strangers -- no doubt in a more confident state.
So why are so many plastic-surgery Web sites gasping for life?
There are lots of reasons. Some are specific to the companies' bad decisions, and others are general to the malaise of all things dot-com. In the end, one or two major players will likely remain standing. So they are racing to amass online directories of as many of the nation's 6,000 certified plastic surgeons as they can enroll. The sites typically charge doctors for the listings or charge consumers for the financing plans they manage.
Perhaps the most aggressive site is thatlook.com (www.thatlook.com), based in Stroudsburg, Pa. Web site viewers are hit with this offer: "Cosmetic surgery for no money down and payments as low as $38 a week." On either side of that pitch are two perfect models, male and female, whose images suggest recent visits to some rather skilled surgeons.
If only more people would see the site, laments Gerard Powell, chief executive of the company. "People don't know about it," says Mr. Powell, who candidly admits he has made some mistakes along the way. His company sponsored two Nascar races this year: the thatlook.com 300, a stock-car race, and the thatlook.com 200, a pickup-truck race. There weren't many female viewers. And even if they were watching, the TV announcers didn't spend much time explaining what thatlook.com actually does. For the company, the cost of the sponsorships was valued at $252,000, representing 2 1/2 months of the company's advertising budget, yet the races only generated three new patients, Mr. Powell says. Mr. Powell's Web site offers free software that consumers can download. That is what Melanie Solomon, a Missouri mother of two, did earlier this year. "I knew I wanted larger [breasts]. But I wasn't exactly sure" what size, she says. So, sitting in her home with husband Christopher, she scanned in a topless picture of herself. Then she morphed her way to D-cup from B-cup. Ms. Solomon was able to keep the images securely on her own computer.
She got her surgery done at the Plastic Surgery Aesthetic Center outside Kansas City. There, patient counselor Carla Casey-Smith says the Internet-available morphing can help people get over the hump. "The worst part of the whole thing is coming in and talking to a doctor," she says. She cautions that the software should explain to users that it is only a guide, and there are limitations to what can be done. That said, she asserts, if the sites were more widely used, plastic-surgery operations could "go through the ceiling."
For now, though, thatlook.com needs financing -- $2 million to $5 million for advertising in order to turn a profit, Mr. Powell says. He charges plastic surgeons $2,500 to $10,000 a month to have thatlook.com manage all their marketing efforts.

Others in the industry say Mr. Powell is charging plastic surgeons too much. "Physicians are cheap," says Elliott Jenkins, iEnhance.com's chief financial officer, of Salt Lake City. His company has linked with McGhan Medical Corp., a unit of Inamed Corp., which makes saline breast implants. If a doctor's office pays $950 annually to iEnhance.com (www.ienhance.com) (which gets them a posting on the Internet), the doctor essentially gets reimbursed by McGhan Medical, according to both iEnhance and McGhan.
IEnhance.com expects to post a $2 million loss this year on revenue of $1.1 million to $1.3 million, Mr. Jenkins says. The company received $4 million in venture funding, of which $1.5 million remains, he adds. Mr. Jenkins says their "low-cost provider" concept will work, and he expects to turn a profit next year. IEnhance boasts 1,400 doctors on its site, which is far more than its competitors, he says.
Meantime, eBody.com (www.eBody.com), in Minneapolis, raised about $5 million in financing, but has fallen on tough times -- shelving plans for an initial public offering and slashing staff. Dr. Scott Ross, the company's founder, says with all the competition, "We're all banging heads against each other." Last week, Dr. Ross, who is still with eBody, stated that his company is forming "strategic partnerships" and added: "If the price is right, everything is for sale, and eBody is no exception."
In addition to these sites, many doctor's offices have posted their own Internet sites, albeit usually less snazzy. A Google.com search for "plastic surgery and financing" yielded 8,760 hits. And one more big player: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, based in Arlington Heights, Ill., which runs an Internet-referral service (www.plasticsurgery.org). This site is relatively subdued and doesn't offer any of the financing hooks.
By comparison, some of the private sites make some doctors squeamish -- a factor working against the sites. There is even one in California, bidforsurgery.com (www.bidforsurgery.com), which follows an eBay model. In general, critics say that aggressive, online medical sites promote the cheapest doctors, not the most qualified. And this is surgery, after all.
Some of the Web sites have further hurt their reputation by steering consumers to certain doctors, says Brian Mullaney, who launched PersonalSurgeon.com (www.personalsurgeon.com) two months ago in New York. At his own site, he says, "We don't push any [certain] doctors."
To attract doctors, he offers free online postings, but plans to start charging next year. To attract consumers, PersonalSurgeon.com has placed full-page ads in The New York Times. PersonalSurgeon.com offers consumers before-and-after morphing. Consumers send in a picture (either traditional pictures or electronic ones). The company produces a rendering of how the patient might look. Mr. Mullaney shrugs off the slowdown in the tech sector, saying it presents an opportunity to hire Web site designers and computer-savvy people: "It's a buyer's market for talent."

Acne Skin Care Health - Is Laser Surgery A Solution?

Hordes of people suffering from acne all over the world has led in recent times to an increase in the number of treatment alternatives available to people suffering from this condition. The classic antibiotics and creams have been supplemented by hormonal treatments, phototherapy and laser surgery. Others are trying to develop still more types of cures, such as diets built to avoid the consumption of dairy products, the use of chromium and zinc supplements and home made cures from various sorts of spices. Many of them haven't been scientifically proven yet.
Laser surgery is the latest technique developed by doctors to reduce the scars left behind by acne. Doctors use laser beams to burn out scar tissue, which allows the skin to generate new, healthy tissue instead. This technique is still in the early, primitive stages since it is used after follicles had turned to pimples and pimples were reduced to scars.
Still, new research shows that laser surgery could be used in the future to prevent acne from even happening, instead of just dealing with the consequences. Medical grade laser may soon be used to burn away the follicle sac where the hair grows or to burn the sebaceous gland in those parts of the skin that were subject to acne outbreaks again and again. Another approach currently being studied is the use of laser to induce the formation of oxygen in the bacteria in order to kill them. However, at this time, laser is still too dangerous for acne prevention since the extreme heat is known to cause long-term dryness of the skin and even spots.
Other research efforts focus on whole-genome DNA sequencing as a tool for identifying the genetic reasons why some people do not suffer from acne or develop only light forms of this condition. However, gene sequencing is still one of those techniques that belong to the future and are unlikely to become available soon.
