Cosmetic Plastic Surgery - What Are The Risks Involved?

by Terry Edwards

Cosmetic plastic surgery is more popular than ever for many different reasons. But even though this type of surgery can alter and improve any area of the body, there are risks and issues to be aware of. Here is a quick look at some of the more serious issues with this procedure.
One of the bigger risks or side effects of cosmetic plastic surgery will always be infections. Infections can occur from a couple of days following surgery until 2-3 later. It is critical to be aware of this as it can lead to serious issues.
Although infections are not that common, it is something that happens more often with plastic surgeries such as breast augmentation or rhinoplasty.
With that said, don't freak out and get stressed over it. Knowing what to keep an eye on is important.
Another area is mental. Depending on the type of cosmetic plastic surgery you are having, it may take several weeks or months for the swelling and scarring to go away. It's easy to feel that something is wrong and the surgery was a failure when that is not the case at all. Be patient and give yourself time to heal.
One of the most important points is to ask your doctor plenty of questions beforehand. Talk with them and understand what to expect before having the procedure.
Having a positive outlook and mind before going through plastic surgery will help you have a smooth procedure as well as help with the healing process.
All in all, the risk of anything going wrong with cosmetic plastic surgery is very low and any problems that may come up can be quickly handled.

The Risks of Lasik Surgery

by T. Daniel Frith, III

The first Lasik eye surgery was performed in 1998; so long term data on the effects of Lasik eye surgery are not available. While Lasik eye surgery has been marketed as a quick and painless way to improve the vision of those afflicted with nearsightedness, Lasik eye surgery may do more harm than good if performed negligently.
Lasik eye surgery procedures are meant to correct faulty or myopic vision, sometimes this procedure has tragic results. To lose your vision as a result of the negligence of a medical professional is a very serious thing.
The Pros and Cons of Lasik Eye Surgery
Undoubtedly, thousands of Americans see better because of Lasik eye surgery - but this procedure is not necessarily right for everyone. Anyone considering Lasik eye surgery should always consult their Lasik eye doctor about the benefits and possible complications of a Lasik procedure. It is important that a potential Lasik patient receives all the information available to make an informed decision.
Lasik is a fairly new procedure for vision correction. It involves surgery of the cornea. A knife, called a microkeratome, is used to cut a flap in the cornea. This flap is lifted out of the way and the doctor reshapes the corneal tissue with a laser. The flap is replaced and quickly adheres to the eyeball. There are no stitches involved. A shield, either plastic or metal, is placed over the eye to protect the flap.
While thousands of people have had Lasik, It does not necessarily mean you will have perfect vision. You may have to return in the future for additional surgery to fine tune your vision. It is also important to remember that there can be serious side effects associated with Lasik eye surgery.
The possible negative side effects of Lasik eye surgery include:
- Loss of lines of vision on a vision chart. - Debilitating visual symptoms, such as glare, halos and double vision. - You may develop severe dry eye syndrome where the eye doesn't produce enough tears to keep the eye moist. - For far sighted patients, your results may diminish with age.
Don't forget that there are no guarantees in medicine, so it is important to make an informed decision in choosing a Lasik eye center and a Lasik eye doctor.
If you feel you have been injured in a lasik eye surgery procedure, contact a medical malpractice lawyer in your area now.

How to Know if You are Ready for Cosmetic Surgery

by James Calvin

You know you're ready to undergo cosmetic surgery when you are in tune with what's going on. Cosmetic surgery is a pretty big commitment and your doctor will be there to help you every step of the way. The key is to know what you want, and you will have the information needed to proceed to the next step. The plastic surgeon is trained to help you figure out what you want to end up looking like. I suggest you make his or her life easier by deciding that on your own and bringing in pictures of what the end result would look like.
You need to made clear by the doctor on your expectations. Your level of expectancy should be real and it's the doctor's job to make sure that you are both on the same page. If you are not serious about going through some steps, then you are not ready for cosmetic surgery. It's recommended that you are in excellent physical health. Now, that does not mean that if you have any serious conditions, you are no longer a candidate for cosmetic surgery. What that means is if you have any preexisting medical conditions, then your doctor needs to know them so they can determine the type of medication can be used during and after the surgery. This is key. If you do not disclose this prior to the operation, this can lead to a very frustrating process.
You should also be in good health mentally and emotionally. If you are going through some hard times in your life, then you may not be ready for cosmetic surgery. This process is intended to be a great time in your life and to help you look the way you deserve and feel. But if you are hoping for miracles to happen with cosmetic surgery, you are looking in the wrong place for your miracles.
If you are a smoker and undergoing cosmetic surgery, now would be a good time to quit, and hopefully for good. Smoking never does anyone any good and will only harm your progress as you are recovering. You need all the strength you can get, so don't hinder the process by smoking.
Keep yourself motivated. Set realistic goals and stay well informed of the entire process. Make sure that you follow up adequately and obey the doctor's orders. If you are highly motivated, you are the best candidate overall because you will be obeying the doctor's commands. And those that obey them will be the ones that succeed. Just remember that you are as responsible for the success of your operation as you are for the failure. The doctor needs your help to see this through.

Getting the Most from LASIK Surgery

by Joseph Then

LASIK eye surgery can completely change the way you see the world around you. It can take your blurry vision and make it clear. You will no longer have to rely on eye glasses or contact lens to see, but be able to wake up each morning jump out of bed and see the world before clearly. Imagine how great that would be. LASIK, though, is not a miracle cure, there are ways you can help ensure your LASIK surgery is a success.
The first thing you should do to ensure you get the most from LASIK surgery is to ensure you are a good candidate. Not everyone is suited for LASIK and in some cases, certain medical conditions could make LASIK surgery too risky. Some of the general qualifications for getting LASIK are:- 18 years or older- Not pregnant or breastfeeding- Not taking certain medications- Have overall healthy eyes with a stable prescriptionOne of the major concerns with LASIK and the reason for these qualifications is hormones in the body can cause subtle changes in the eye that can effect vision and therefore can effect the results of the LASIK surgery.
You should also understand that while LASIK is generally successful in producing vision clear enough to avoid the use of corrective lens, that it will not correct other eye conditions that do not effect the cornea. LASIK is designed to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It will not treat problems in other areas of the eye and it will not stop the condition that causes a person to need reading glasses as this is an age related condition. It is reasonable to have high expectations, but you should be clear on what the results may be.
Part of getting the most from LASIK surgery is also choosing the right doctor. You need to ask a lot of questions about your surgeons experience and the overall LASIK experience. Your surgeon should be experienced with using the equipment and with doing LASIK surgery. He should be able to answer any question you have as well.
To get the most form LASIK surgery involves you being prepared for the surgery. It is not all just about getting perfect vision. You want the whole experience to be a good one. The most you can expect is to walk away being grateful and happy that you had the surgery it is then that you have really gotten the most form your LASIK surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery - Possible Complications and Risks

by Brandon Cornett

Any type of surgery comes with a certain degree of risk, and weight loss surgery (also known as bariatric surgery) is no different. But what are the potential complications of weight loss surgery, and how common are they? We will attempt to answer these questions here.
What is Weight Loss Surgery?
Before we talk about the possible complications of weight loss surgery, we need to define what this type of surgery entails, just so we are on the same page. Simply stated, bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery both refer to the same thing -- various types of surgery intended to help obese patients lose weight.
In her book The Patient's Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, author April Hochstrasser defines bariatric surgery as "surgery on the stomach and/or intestines to help people lose weight by altering the normal digestive process."
Complications of Weight Loss Surgery
The complications associated with weight loss surgery vary, based on the type of surgery being performed. And, of course, the potential risks and complications of general surgery apply here as well.
Potential complications of general surgery:
* Respiratory problems
* Risk of infection (from incision area)
* Excessive bleeding (internal or external)
* Allergic reaction to medicines
* Reactions to anesthesia
Potential complications of weight loss surgery:
* Leaking of stomach acid or bacteria into the abdominal cavity
* Vitamin and mineral deficiencies as a result of malabsorption
* Hernia in the abdominal wall (with gastric bypass)
* Dumping syndrome (heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, etc.)
The major risks of weight loss surgery:
* Leaking of stomach content into other areas
* Blood clots
* Respiratory failure
According to the University of Iowa report "Mortality in Obesity Surgery," the majority of patients who die within a month of weight loss surgery suffer one of the three major complications above.

Why Is A Lung Surgery Necessary?

by Mayoor Patel

When it comes to invasive surgical procedures, most of us don't have any real clue of what happens during the procedure or what type of precautions are taken to ensure a successful procedure. In fact, we may not be in any position to understand when a procedure may even be necessary. Here are some things about lung surgery you should know, including when the procedure would definitely be appropriate.
Lung surgery is a type of medical procedure that is performed on a patient with severe lung problems. This is done especially when a mass is found in the lungs. Likewise, it is done in cases where the lung wall is weak or fluids are collected inside the lungs. Under such cases, lung surgery is necessary to assess the level of the problem and to treat the problem. There will be cases when a part of the lung has to be removed or sometimes, all of it will have to be taken away. This will depend on the surgeon's recommendation, as to what process is necessary for a patient's condition.
Lung surgery is necessary to assess the lung problem even if non-invasive imaging tests such as chest x-ray, CT Scans and MRI has already detected mass, weak lung wall or fluids in the lungs. The reason is that these imaging tests do not have a way of knowing if the mass found inside the lungs is benign or already malignant. Only surgery can detect or assess the depth of the problem.
The procedure of lung surgery involves entering the chest wall in order to have access to the lungs. There are two types of lung surgery available today. The procedure can either be a thoracoscopy or a thoracotomy. Thoracoscopy is much easier and a less invasive lung surgery procedure than thoracotomy. In thoracoscopy, a surgeon uses a thin tube with a small camera and passes it through a small incision in the chest to view inside of the lungs with a video monitor. There are cases when thoracoscopy is done, a surgeon will insist to perform thoracotomy, too. Thoracotomy is the old way of doing lung surgery. A large incision is made on the chest when surgery is being done so as to view the lungs directly.
In the end, your health care professional can help you to understand why lung surgery is in your best interests and what you can expect during the recovery period. Listen closely to what he or she has to say, and make sure to ask any questions that come to mind. In the end, you will feel much better about proceeding with the surgery.

The Best Weight Loss Surgery Choice For Very High BMI Patients

by Donald Saunders

There are a large number of choices available today when it comes to weight loss surgery, from the classical Roux-en-Y gastric bypass to laparoscopic or robotic adjustable gastric banding, but which is the best choice for patients with a particularly high BMI?
First we need to define what we mean by a particularly high BMI. It is generally accepted that obesity starts at a BMI of 30 and becomes morbid obesity at 40. This is the point at which most doctors will consider a surgical solution to the problem. With a BMI in the 40s patients are generally suitable for all forms of weight loss surgery (unless excluded by such things as co-existing medical condition) however, as BMI passes 50, the risks of gastric bypass surgery rise steeply and choices become limited. Against this background we would define a particularly high BMI as being 50 or above.
Despite the increased risks, some patients are nonetheless considered suitable and do opt for gastric bypass surgery while others take the safer route of gastric banding, but which is better?
In a recent study involving 106 patients (all of whom had a BMI in excess of 50) 60 patients underwent gastric banding while the remaining 46 opted for gastric bypass surgery. More than three quarters of the gastric banding patients suffered complications, which included dehydration and vomiting, while less than one third of the gastric bypass patients suffered complications. In addition, the gastric banding patients experienced only about one third of the weight loss recorded for the gastric bypass patients.
Perhaps most surprisingly, more than three quarters of the gastric bypass patients were satisfied with their result and none regretted their choice. By contrast, less than half of the gastric banding patients were happy with the results and ten percent actually expressed dissatisfaction or regretted their decision.
On the surface therefore it would appear that gastric bypass surgery is clearly the preferred choice. However, for many patients with a high BMI this is simply not an option as the risks are simply too high, so what is the answer in these cases?
Without doubt the preferred option is a combination of restrictive surgery, such as gastric banding, in the first instance to reduce weight to less than a BMI of 50 and then to follow this up with a second form of absorption surgery, such as the gastric bypass. In many cases however, rather than gastric banding, the preferred choice is to use a vertical gastrectomy (sometimes referred to as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy) as the first element in this two-stage surgical process.

Plastic Surgery Advancements

by Andrew Flintoff

First the definition of Plastic Surgery is: Surgical repair of congenital or acquired deformities and the restoration of contour to improve the appearance and function of tissue defects. Development of this specialized branch of surgery received impetus from the need to repair gross deformities sustained in World War I. By the grafting of tissue or the use of artificial materials such as silicone, some remarkable restorations have become possible. Severe burns and the removal of fairly extensive skin cancers leave scars that must be covered by skin grafts; breast reconstruction after mastectomy is another application. In addition to correcting a disfigurement, plastic surgery is often needed to restore vital movement and function of tissues that have been destroyed. It is also performed for purely cosmetic purposes, such as improving the shape of a nose, bringing outstanding ears closer to the head, or lifting the skin to erase wrinkles. Modern plastic surgeons often employ CAT scans to produce computer-generated images that are used to plan or simulate complex reconstructive surgeries. The very first descriptions of skin grafts date back to India circa 800 B.C., where they served to obstruct the facial hole resulting from nose amputations. During the Renaissance, Ambroise Par developed the art of suture, leaving records in which he describes both the instruments and the technique employed. In the 19th century, new methods for operating were developed, ending earlier rudimentary and painful procedures. However, at that time the Catholic Church was strongly opposed to the advancement of science in general, and specifically opposed remodeling the human form. But in the 20th century, when Europe was confronted with the seriously mutilated faces of soldiers returning from the fronts of WWI, the imperative to repair them grew, and plastic surgery finally gained a respectable place in the medical profession. Then World War II came and once again, plastic surgeons used their skills to help their countrymen. This led to more plastic surgery advances. Then by the 1950s, plastic surgery was fully integrated into the medical community. In the 1960s, the concept of plastic surgery grew in the consciousness of the American public as more physicians performed plastic surgery procedures. Plus in this decade, silicone started being used in plastic surgery and started becoming a part of our culture. Now in the 1970s, the plastic surgeon became one of the leading medical professions. And in the 1980s, plastic surgery was expanding all over the country. By the 1990s, there thousands of board-certified plastic surgeons and the numbers continue to grow, even today. Now there are thousands of plastic surgeons, offering a variety of plastic surgery procedures to patients not just in the United States, but all over the world.Plastic surgery were it once was just for the very rich has become affordable for almost all Americans. Plastic surgery has truly come a long way and continues to make advancements in the complexity of procedures performed today. You are welcome to reproduce this article: Plastic Surgery Advancements as long as a live link to http://www.sleepingswan.com is provided.

The Biggest Secret To Successful Cosmetic Laser Surgery

by Terry Edwards

Cosmetic laser surgery has certainly come a long way from its early beginnings. What was once a very expensive and drawn out procedure has become a cost effective and sought after procedure in treating various areas of the body.
Lasers of today can pinpoint specific areas of the skin and can reach places that would be nearly impossible to reach with a scalpel. In addition, laser surgery takes away those surgical scars that use to be the norm.
Today, many people use cosmetic laser surgery to help them look and feel younger. Laser procedures such as face lifts, eye and chin lifts have exploded in popularity. And with good reason; these cosmetic procedures can make you appear 20 years younger in many cases.
Cosmetic laser surgery, while very safe to perform, does involve some risk, but that can be said about any type of surgery.
Cosmetic surgery will take a while to heal. During this healing period you could notice things such as:
-Reddening of the skin that almost looks like a rash
-Flushing
-Hypopigmentation
-Possible scarring
Although these side effects are rare, you need to be aware of them in any event.
The biggest secret in having a successful surgery is always in finding your best doctor. Be sure you thoroughly check out the credentials of any doctor before making a decision. Please do not overlook this important point.
Ask questions and don't be shy. You want to know you are in capable, well qualified hands before having surgery. By taking some extra time with this step you will be much happier and experience and dramatically reduce the risk of anything going wrong.
Cosmetic laser surgery is a great option for anyone looking to refresh their skin and gain back the years.

What You Need to Know About Neck Surgery

by Mayoor Patel

If you have recently begun to feel intense amounts of neck or back pain, you may have a condition that needs treatment from a medical professional. Often such conditions are easily curable with a simple hot or cold pad or regular visits to a chiropractor, but for more advanced, for more severe cases, your only option may be neck surgery.
Surgery on your neck involves cutting into your spine in order to correct some sort of anatomical defect which is causing your pain. While there are other, less invasive types of surgeries and treatments available, neck surgery is often your only choice if you are suffering from a pain that cannot be treated in any other way. This is only provided that the source of your pain can be identified, as exploratory surgery on your neck is never an option that you should consider due to the relatively high risk of damaging a vital part of your body.
All surgery which is done on the spine or the neck should only be conducted by an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon. If you are considering receiving surgery in this area of your body from a surgeon that is not one of these two types, you should definitely think it over and go with a licensed and trained orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon instead.
The most important thing to remember about any type of spinal surgery, including surgery on the neck, is that it is totally elective. There are often a variety of other ways in which you can treat your pain or discomfort without having to go under the knife. Sometimes neck surgery is not even the best way to treat such problems. However, it should always be a type of surgery that you should really only consider as a relatively last resort, as there is usually more risk involved in such surgery than potential benefits. There is no reason to rush into this type of surgery. Make sure your talk at length with both your primary care physician and any specialist who would be involved with the procedure. Do not hesitate to get a second opinion if you have any doubts whatsoever about the need to have this surgery. In the end, you will be the one who must live with the outcome. Make sure you have a full understanding of the risks involved, then make your final decision. Going into this type of surgery with both eyes open is imperative.

Gastric Bypass Surgery helps you achieve that ideal weight

by Nicholas Bowen

Tired of crash diets and bone crunching exercises at the gym? No matter what you do, that ideal weight always manages to elude you time and time again. New products that are constantly advertised on television have been tried and discarded. You stare nostalgically at your old pair of jeans having given up all hope of ever fitting into that precious pair. You hang around malls searching for maternity clothes that fit your size - and you are not pregnant. Self-esteem is at an all time low. All these signs are typical symptoms of an overweight person. A gastric bypass surgery could be the magic key that you have been searching for that will release all your weight related problems.
A gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure that can help you loose weight. Surgeons have successfully performed it on overweight patients, helping them reduce their weight significantly. A gastric bypass surgery can be the ideal option for any person, medically deemed fit, to loose weight and gain a new life that comes with a high self esteem. The high success rate of this surgery gives further hope to other potential candidates. A surgery, unlike other weight loss options, has guaranteed results. Many overweight persons have been convinced to buy easy weight loss kits that have miserably failed to keep up to their claims. A bypass surgery will have no such chances of failure.
The increased pressure to look good and the concept of 'thin is in' has caused many teenagers to go in for drastic weight reduction methods, causing more harm than good. A gastric bypass surgery, being a medical surgery carried out by competent surgeons, will ensure that people who opt for it are not at any health risk. A person has to be within the age group of 18 to 65 years, not suffering from alcohol abuse and has been obese for over 5 years, having a body weight that is at least 100 pounds over normal body weight. Severely overweight people who are suffering from life threatening diseases caused by obesity are also ideal candidates for this kind of surgery.
Many obese people fall in the vicious cycle of eating junk food, gaining weight, getting depressed due to weight gain and then eating more junk food to cure the depression. Such people find it very hard to break the habit of eating more and more with no exercise at all and soon their weight spirals beyond control. A gastric bypass surgery could be a 'god send' just the ideal option for people who eat excessively out of sheer habit and because their body requires it. The surgery makes the stomach smaller, allowing the food to bypass certain parts of the small intestine and making the person's stomach fill up more a much lesser quantity of food.
If other weight loss programs and gadgets have disappointed you till now the option of gastric bypass surgery provides hope. Obesity poses a serious health hazard besides ruining your looks and lowering your self confidence. Give yourself new leash of life with gastric bypass surgery.

How To Find Cosmetic Surgery Financing

by Terry Edwards

If you have been contemplating cosmetic surgery then you knew it can cost a lot of money depending on the type of procedure. This is where cosmetic surgery financing can be a huge help.
Although you will find some who will put the cost of surgery on a personal credit card, for most folks this simply is not an option. With that said, a credit card will be accepted by just about every cosmetic surgery center and does work well as a method of payment.
The drawbacks with using plastic will often be the high interest rates that are charged unless you can pay off the balance pretty quickly.
Obtaining a cash advance from any credit card is a very bad financing option. You will be with fees along with ridiculous interest.
Other cosmetic surgery financing options can include bank loans or even home equity loans. Yes, there are people who do go this route to finance their surgery.
You will also find that many surgeons and surgery centers will also provide financing options as well. You should discuss this with your doctor when you first begin gathering information.
Some may require a down payment on the amount while some may not. Regardless, always check the terms of any agreement before hand to be sure of what you are signing for. This type of financing can be good for both parties if the terms are fair.
Cosmetic surgery financing is not that difficult to find if you take your time and do your homework. If done right, it can make any cosmetic surgery a big success.

Lap Band Surgery Or A 500 Calorie Diet?

by Donald Saunders

If you are contemplating lap band surgery then you might well be encouraged by the results of an Australian study which reported that, in a controlled test, lap band surgery proved to be far more effective in the long term than a very restrictive 500 calorie diet. However, before you rush off to your surgeon, you might just like to take a moment to examine the study closely.
The study involved a total of 80 patients half of whom were given lap band surgery and half of whom were put on a very low calorie diet of just 500 calories.
After six months both groups were showing similar results and had lost about fourteen percent of their starting weight. However, at the end of two years the results for the two groups looked very different.
The lap band surgery patients had lost about twenty two percent of their starting weight and showed a marked improvement in their health and quality of life. By contrast, the dieting group had re-gained much of the weight they lost in the first few months of their diet and, on average, were only just over five percent below their starting weight.
This result would seem to confirm what many people, including most doctors, already know and this is that dieting, other than to lose the odd pound or two now and again, really doesn't work. It would also appear to make a strong case for gastric banding.
Lap band surgery is one of several options open to patients as a solution to the problem of morbid obesity and is generally only considered once a patient's BMI reaches 40. Exceptions can be made and lap banding offered to patients with a BMI as low as 35, but this is normally only done when the patient is also suffering from a potentially life threatening medical condition which is linked to being overweight. For the majority of patients this means that lap band surgery would normally be considered at the point at which they are about 100 pounds overweight.
In the case of this study however the patients chosen for the study were just 50 pounds overweight. So, can we really rely on these results when this is not the target group to which lap band surgery would normally be applied?
The truth of the matter is of course that lap band surgery can be very effective in cases of morbid obesity and is proving to be a very popular choice with many patients. As with all forms of obesity treatment however it is vitally important that we collect sound data so that the various different methods can be evaluated and patients given accurate advice on which they can base their treatment decisions.
Studies of this nature certainly do not add to the base of knowledge which we need to be building and have more to do with grant funding from a lap band manufacturer than they do with any desire to advance the treatment of obesity.
Of course that is only the writer's view and you may well disagree.

Mesothelioma Treatment: Surgery

by Laura Russell

Surgery is an important step in confirming and knowing the nature of the cancer. It can be conducted on patients with the combination of adjuvant chemotherapies and radiations, before and after the surgery.

Pleurectomy:
The most common surgery for Mesothelioma treatment is pleurectomy, in which doctors open the patient's chest and remove the excessive fluid or tumor from the lining of the lungs (pleura). Although this procedure controls the accumulation of fluid and decreases pain, it still is not a cure. On the other hand, if the tumor is in its initial form and has not extensively grown, a pleurectomy can increase the survival rate of a patient when combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Additionally, a pleurectomy can be performed on patients with less-approving health conditions and has lower mortality rate than the extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP):
Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) is an invasive and severe form of surgery conducted on patients with Mesothelioma. In this treatment, parts of the lungs, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (lining of the heart) and the hemi-diaphragm, along with the tumor cells, are removed. It decreases the progression of Mesothelioma, while allowing a patient to breathe smoothly. It is usually conducted on patients with early stages of the cancer and when the tumor is in chest cavity. EPP is recommended for patients with good heart and lungs conditions, in order to endure the severities of the post-operative term. Though the surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation gives promising results, it does not guarantee a cure. Researches have shown that patients treated with extrapleural pneumonectomy and therapies have a medium life span of 35 months after the surgery, compared to only 9 months of pleurectomy. Still, some doctors question the surgery for its high risks, which include internal bleeding, blood clotting, pneumonia, amassing of pus, respiratory failure and even death. Thus, many surgeons recommend the idea of pleurectomy instead of the technically complicated EPP.

Thoracentesis:
A minor surgery is often conducted on patients who cannot undergo EPP or pleurectomy, called thoracentesis. In thoracentesis, a thoracic surgeon inserts a needle into a patient's chest to remove the excessive fluid built up in the lining of the lungs (pleura). This method neither cures nor decreases the cancer, but rather alleviate the painful symptoms of Mesothelioma. In some cases, talc or other agents are infused into a patient's chests to scar the chest wall and help them breathe properly without letting the tumor to increase, to some extent.

Paracentesis:
Paracentesis is a similar method of using a needle to extract fluid, but from the abdominal section of the body. It follows the same procedure of extracting fluid from the lining of the stomach or other abdominal organs. Patients with peritoneal Mesothelioma can benefit from paracentesis surgery.

Hair loss surgery | hair orientation

by Alien Sheng

Hair loss surgery, for those that are considering this, they may also be looking into the possible factors that will relate to this procedure. Because of the changes that are made from hair loss surgery, some believe that the category of hair replacement is not put into same groupings or placements as the regular hair. Replacing the hair through hair loss surgery causes one to not have the expected look. To decide whether it is the right method for hair replacement or not you have to understand the details of hair loss surgery and how hair orientation relates to this.
Natural alignment of hair
All of us known that hair will grow with a natural alignment. If for some amount of time this hair is not on your head then you make a decision to get surgery, then the physician will need to establish how to make the natural alignment of your hair grow back. The hair that is remained on your head will tell the physicians how the hair has naturally grown. Not a lot of research was done on how to make sure that this natural growth occurs after hair loss surgery and what the top methods are to make sure that your hair grows back with its usual orientation.
The role of surgeons
The surgeons will need to adopt a different technique when you are going to get hair loss surgery in order to ascertain where they need to make the changes in your head and how this needs to be done. Most can easily determine the groupings of hair and where they were positioned. Surgery changes the hair orientation to a different shape. This is connected to the way in which the slits are made for the movement of hair growth. The lateral slit is supposed to allow a more natural angle of the hair, while others will change the hair to grow back differently. In relation to this, several physicians will argue whether the hair needs to stop being slit and replaced to give the fullest look.
To achieve fullness on the head is an objective for surgeons to find the best way for hair orientation in hair loss surgery. They have now found that hair growth will usually cover the scalp in front of it and to one side. Based on the side of the head that the hair is located at this will vary. Physicians are learning that they have to work with the various areas of the head and how they affect this orientation, as it will be diverse on all sides of the head.
Ask the physician
Make sure to ask the physician about the natural placement of your hair if you are considering hair loss surgery for hair replacement. They will need to determine which way your hair should obviously grow and determine how to perform the proper hair loss surgery from here. Having the right hair orientation will help you in looking better as well as have a thicker looking head of hair after the surgery.

Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery - Rotator Cuff Tendonitis

by Steve Madigan

First let's find out what shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis is? There are several other names that this can be called. Some are known as tennis shoulder, pitcher's shoulder and even a shoulder impingement. These are all common names for a very similar problem.
So what is it? Shoulder tendonitis or rotator cuff tendonitis is the inflammation and can be an irritation and swelling of the tendons of the shoulder. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket type joint. The top part of the arm bone (humerus) forms a joint with the shoulder blade (scapula). The rotator cuff holds the head of the humerus into the scapula.
What is the most common cause of rotator cuff tendonitis?
A lot of the time the problem occurs with sports. Inflammation of the tendons of the shoulder muscles occur in sports using the arm being moved over the head repeatedly. Such sports are tennis, baseball (pitching mainly) swimming and even lifting weights over the head. What happens sometimes is you get the inflammation or injury and can cause the tendons of the rotator cuff to tear. Sometimes this occurs in people over 40 years of age.
Some of the symptoms
Pain when the arm is moved
Arm is weak when rising over your head
Pain in shoulder at night, especially when lying on the affected shoulder.
Pain in arm when performing overhead activities
How to find out if you have shoulder tendonitis?
X-ray's or MRI. X-ray's can show a burn spur. The MRI can show the inflammation in the rotator cuff. There could also be a tear in the rotator cuff and the MRI will show this.
Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery
Before shoulder tendonitis surgery, you should try physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff. If the pain is too great to start physical therapy a steroid injection (cortisone) may reduce pain and inflammation enough to start effective therapy.
If there is a tear in the rotator cuff or therapy has not helped and symptoms persist, shoulder surgery may be necessary. For most shoulder surgery, this can be accomplished with arthroscopic surgery. This type of surgery is effective in removing the bone spur and inflamed tissue around the shoulder.
You can also treat small tears with shoulder tendonitis surgery and arthroscopic surgery. There are even some new techniques that allow even large tears to be repaired with arthroscopic surgery. Now there are some large tears that are going to require open surgery to repair the torn tendon.
Shoulder Tendonitis Surgery Expectations
Once the shoulder tendonitis surgery is completed and the bone spur or tear has been repaired arthroscopic ally, you can expect the use of the shoulder to pre-injury levels. The activities that you performed prior to the injury should be able to perform them once again.
There are a couple of factors in determining the success of the shoulder tendonitis surgery. People with tears of their rotator cuff that have had the shoulder tendonitis surgery (arthroscopic) will do well. It will depend upon the size and the duration of the tear. The age of the patient will also have a bearing on the outcome and what the pre-injury level of function was.
So there are some things that you can do and the success of the shoulder tendonitis surgery should have a successful outcome in most cases. In another article I will discuss the rehabilitation of shoulder tendonitis surgery.

Cosmetic Eye Surgery - Looking Younger Just Became Easier

by Terry Edwards

Cosmetic eye surgery is among the top surgeries preformed in the quest to make ourselves look 10-15 years younger. And while this medical procedure is safe, there are things you need to know before scheduling any surgery.
Cosmetic eye surgery basically involves removing the bags and wrinkles around your eyes. The result is tighter skin around the eyes and a more youthful appearance. The surgery can leave you not only looking younger, but give you more confidence and an overall better feeling.
Some points to keep in mind concerning this type of cosmetic surgery are the fact that it is expensive. Since it is obviously not covered under health insurance you will need to have the funds on hand to have the procedure done.
Also, there is always the risk of complications with surgery. Although they are rare, as with any type of surgery there is always the possibility of something going wrong.
The best way to reduce any risks is finding your best surgeon possible. Take the time to speak with 3-4 different cosmetic surgeons if possible. Check out their qualifications and past history. Ask questions and get a feel for whether you feel confident or not.
Yes, this will take a little effort on your part, but cosmetic eye surgery is serious. Anytime someone is going to alter your face, you want to be sure you are in the right hands.
You can find many well qualified plastic surgeons to choose from in most cases, so don't feel overwhelmed.
Once your surgery is finished, don't have unrealistic expectations. Regardless of all the before and after pictures you have seen, each person is different. It will also take a few weeks before you will really be able to see things more clearly. Your skin needs time to heal before you can get a good feel for how you will look.
Cosmetic eye surgery is an excellent way to take off the wrinkles and look younger. And understanding all the issues you need to be aware of will help you have a successful procedure.

Usui's Reiki and Psychic Surgery

by Patrick Hamouy

Reiki is a gentle but powerful form of healing. When Psychic Surgery is added to it, Reiki turns into "Miracle Healing".
There are basically two different forms of Psychic Surgery
1- The one practised by most Western Psychic Surgeons
2- The one practised by gifted healers such as the famous Filipino Psychic Surgeons. These are also known as "Bare Hand Surgeons"
Western Psychic Surgery and Reiki explained
All Western Psychic Surgery I have witnessed or heard of in the UK is bloodless. The surgeon works on the etheric body (the aura). He does not penetrate the skin or the bones and does not remove physical matters from within the body.
In my Reiki Masters course, I teach this form of Psychic surgery based on Reiki and on my experience gained from Filipino Bare Hand Surgeons. I have been visiting these surgeons in the Philippines since 1997. I am now able to combine the experience of both Western and Asian forms of surgery into a very powerful method of healing.
The method I teach is simple:
1- Use both the Reiki Master symbol and the Power symbol on your hands to energise them.
2- You may want to protect yourself with the Power symbol by drawing it in front of you
3- Say a prayer or request to your guide(s) to channel you for this Psychic Surgery operation.
4- Elongate your fingers by pulling on them and extending them by a few inches whilst inhaling and making a "wind" noise between your lips
5- Draw an Usui's Master symbol on your finger's extension
6- Ask what is or intuitively "see" the problem inside your client's body - if you cannot see, ask the client to describe the problem with questions such as: Where is it? what shape? What colour? What consistence? etc.. until you have a perfect view of what the problem is
7- Operate using your extended fingers: visualise these extensions going inside the client's body and removing blockages, tumours, draining pus, cleaning etc.. you may, for this exercise use whatever etheric tool you need such as lasers, knife, chisel, hammer, magic fluid etc..
8- Communicate with your Clent during the operation. Keep asking them what they feel and tell them what you feel yourself.
9- Keep the operation going until you feel you have completely removed, cleaned or unblocked the problem
To make sure this is working, you must be convinced that the surgery will work otherwise you are wasting your time. You must visualise without doubting and "know" the person is going to get better. Keep repeating to yourself many times something like "the tumour is melting" or "this xxxx is disappearing" and believe it.
The above has brought miracle cures to many of my clients. Having said this, unless the cause of a problem is removed, the problem may keep coming back. This is the topic of another one of my articles on "Cancer - Causes of disease".
Bare Hand Surgery, as practised in the Philippines, explained
Basically, a Bare Hand Surgeon enters a person's body using his / her Bare Hands and manually removes diseased or dead tissues, tumours, energy blockages, calcium deposits and other matters that should not be there. This is done without inflicting any pain, coming out without leaving any visible marks or scars.
I have personally been visiting Bare Hand Surgeons with groups in the Philippines since 1997 and I have witnessed thousands of these surgeries. I have worked with over 30 surgeons but I have only kept 3 which, I believe, are genuine. I caught the others cheating or they lacked honesty.
Psychic Surgery is impossible some say? Possibly, but this is only a scientific point of view. I do not understand how telepathy works but I accept it. Many police forces around the world use mediums to catch criminals. Their success rate is high. This is not very scientific but it works. "Remote viewers" have been shown many times on TV and it was proved that these people could see through the eyes of another person who was miles away. How does this all work? It does not matter. What matters is that it works.
"What conditions can be treated?
The following only represents a few examples of conditions I have personally seen treated by the Bare Hand Surgeons I have visited:
* Several years ago, Bare Hand Surgery was successfully performed on a friend of mine suffering from Parkinson's disease. This successfully stopped the progression of the disease for many years (this gentleman never worked on the cause and the problem eventually came back).
* Recently, a Psychic surgeon cleared "growths" from around my prostate. He then left a Kleenex tissue inside my body overnight to prevent the seeping of blood back in the testicles (I could feel the tissue by pressing on the point where it was inserted).
* I had a 12" tumour removed from my large intestines. I was eating a normal meal half an hour latter.
* A member of our group had her ovaries and fallopian tubes "cleaned" .
* The eyes of a person suffering from cataract where "cleaned"
* One member of our group had growths that were attached to her spine removed. This lady had had problems moving her head fully and had suffered from chronic pains in her shoulders for many years. The instant improvement to the head was obvious and her shoulder pains have now completely disappeared. Months of physical therapy had previously had very little impact.
* I witnessed two different Bare Hand Surgeons successfully remove deep brain tumours from two different patients.
* Another Bare Hand Surgeon cleared a "goitre" from a gentleman's throat
* One surgeon removed numerous tumours from a patient's reproductive organs who was suffering from terminal cancer. This person is now feeling alright
* One surgeon cleaned the arteries of a patient around his heart
etc.. etc.. the list is too long to mention.
Basically, Bare Hand Surgeons do not specialise in any specific disease. They work with "energy" on everything presented to them (as long as their guides allow it).
Can success be guaranteed?
There is no implied or explicit guarantee by ethical healers or myself for this form of Alternative Therapies.
Is Bare Hand Surgery fake or real?
Each time a film is shown on Bare Hand Surgery, it portrays the procedure as being some act of magic. The interesting thing is that the people who perform the magic, or those who ask them to perform it, have never been to the Philippines and have never witnessed the surgery themselves. They ridicule something they have never seen because they don't understand it.
Testing the Bare Hand Surgery
To test a "surgeons" who claims to be a Bare Hand Surgeon, I set up the following test for them.
1- They must work with short sleeve shirts
2- They have to work on a couch or bed I have first inspected to make sure nothing was hidden
3- They must show me their hands just before the surgery and start operating without touching anything
If they can still generate blood and matters from inside the body, they have past my first test
The other tests come with the working on clients over a period of time and the recovery of the client.
I was asked to feel a person's tumour before the surgery. It was rolling under my index finger. After the surgery was performed, the tumour was no longer there. Other members of my group felt the same.
Finally, when I take a group to the Philippines, my students are able to film the surgery. The surgeon is then surrounded by camera from the right, the left, the front, the back and sometimes even from above if somebody dares climb on a chair to film. Since 1997, and thousands of surgery later, nobody in my group has ever caught one of the surgeon I visit cheating.
To me, a few Bare Hand Surgeons in the Philippines are genuine and many are fake.

Alternatives to Cosmetic Surgery

by Joshua Berkowitz

While it is true that beauty is only skin deep and it is the person "inside" who is most important, we are all being judged constantly on how we look and dress. Most people, especially in competitive work and social environments want to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible to enhance their prospects of success. There is a rapidly growing trend in most western countries to accept cosmetic procedures. In surveys 80% of women feel they would have a cosmetic procedure if the treatment were safe, effective and subtle, so that it was not obvious to the observer.Cosmetic surgery, once the domain of only the rich and famous, is now commonplace. However many people see cosmetic surgery as a step-too-far and prefer to seek effective alternatives. There is therefore a popular range of effective safe therapies as alternatives to cosmetic surgery. For rejuvenation of the skin surface there are treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion to enhance the aura and skin glow. These treatments can chemically or mechanically remove the uppermost skin layers, increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels both help to improve the health of the skin, and can remove or diminish fine lines, and many brown and/or red skin blemishes. The microdermabrasion and peels can be combined with mesotherapy to further enhance the skin tone. Mesotherapy ensures a good supply of vitamins and minerals and other micro-nutrients to the skin. Mesotherapy also promotes proper skin hydration.Chemical peels are of varying strengths and nature and should be carefully chosen appropriate to the patient skin type and aims of the treatment. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and mesotherapy can be used singly or in harmony to treat and enhance not only the face but also the neck, hands and the de collete.Whilst much attention is lavished on the face, the body too can be rejuvenated using the VelaSmooth cellulite machine to smooth away cellulite and the SmartLipo laser lipolysis system to literally and safely melt away stubborn deposits of fat. The VelaSmooth machine (from Syneron) is an FDA approved system to reduce the appearance of cellulite. The VelaSmooth treatment requires a course of a dozen sessions to restore the smoothness and appearance of cellulite. The SmartLipo laser is able to simply and methodically remove specific fat deposits with complete accuracy and reliability. The procedure should be carried out by a trained medical doctor in a specially prepared operating theatre. The Healthcare Commission should have specifically inspected and passed the theatre as being fit for purpose. Patients are strongly advised to avoid having Smart Lipo laser lipolysis in less than suitable premises. Patients should check if the theatre that they are offered has been specifically inspected and passed for the Smartlipo procedure.
So why not consider alternatives to cosmetic surgery, especially if they are really effective? If you still can't make up your mind, go to any aesthetics centre like Wimpole Aesthetics where you can get good advices.

Plastic Surgery

by Ihab Kharma

Age plays its number without sound. But when we hear it, it's a crash. We live in a finite world and believe in timeless beauty. But ofcourse reality is something else. Plastic surgery or reconstructive surgery helps regain that youthful look. Body contouring surgery addresses all the areas and helps bring your body shape back. It includes a number of procedures like liposuction, tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift, arm lift, breast lift, face and neck lift. These procedures used in conjunction help regain beauty lost to age.
A traditional facelift would be a major surgery which would take some recovery time. Though our surgeons today are trying minimally invasive surgeries. They identify and target just the real problem area. They just try and restore lost volume and improve the contours of the face. The major areas of aging are addressed and the youthful look is regained with a less extensive surgery. The surgery aims at a youthful look but with a more natural appearance.
Plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery gives you a remarkable transformation. Long noses straightened, stretch marks lightened or completely removed, flabby stomachs flattened, wrinkles removed, face lifts and rhinoplasty help you feel like a new person. These surgeries ofcourse sometimes take hours and hours and one has to be mentally prepared to endure this. But the end result is worth the effort and risk.
Though one should go through extensive research before zeroing down on the hospital and the surgeon. These surgeries have become commonplace but it is always better to be completely sure that you are in safe hands. The Plastic Surgery Institute of California has a good team of professional surgeons. They will take you through the entire procedure with care and precision. No surgery can be minor no matter how common they have become. According to a recent study extreme makeovers are safe when you are in the hands of experienced and board certified cosmetic surgeons. It is always better to get all the multiple surgeries performed at the same time, it saves healing time and today with our way advanced technology it is better to do them all in one go. Though one has to make sure that one is medically fit and the surgeon qualified enough to perform them all.

Reasons for Choosing Bloodless Medicine and Surgery

by Katieg

Across the country and around the world more and more people are choosing the option of bloodless surgery. Up until about 20 years ago, this was not even an option, but more hospitals and medical centers are beginning to recognize the need to present this option. In fact, it is reported that in 1996 there were less than 100 centers that provided bloodless care. Research in bloodless medicine and surgery has also helped to advance this field.
People choose bloodless medicine for a variety of reasons. Many people mistakenly believe that the only people who choose bloodless medicine are Jehovah's Witnesses for their religious beliefs. While it is true that they have done a lot to help prompt advances in the field of bloodless medicine, they are not the only group of people seeking care at centers that offer this option. The scares of infections in the blood supply, most notably the high rate of hemophiliacs that contracted HIV in the 1980's through blood transfusions, has raised the consciousness of the public regarding infections that can be transmitted through blood. These infections include: Syphilis, Malaria, Hepatitis A, B, and C, and Crutzfeldt-Jacob virus (which causes "mad cow" disease in humans). Other reasons for choosing bloodless surgery include accidentally receiving the wrong blood type and the possibility of having an allergic reaction to other factors in the donors blood, both of which can be life threatening. If you have a rare blood type or rare blood factors, bloodless medicine might be your only option.
For whatever reason you choose bloodless medicine or are considering to choose bloodless medicine, it is important that you do research. Because there are so few hospitals that offer this option, you want to make sure that you are choosing the one that is right for you. The best way to do research on hospitals that perform bloodless medicine and surgery and find out important things such as how long they have been doing it and their success rates. Whatever decision you make needs to be a well informed decision, especially when it comes to your health and your life.

Steps To Ensure Safe Laser Eye Surgery

by M. Jedediah

In the modern world, laser eye surgery is one of most widely performed procedures every year. Since it was first performed in the United States in 1991, more and more people looking to rid themselves of expensive and inconvenient eyeglasses and contact lenses, have turned to corrective eye surgery to achieve their goals.
Today, more than one million people in the U.S. alone have undergone the procedure - most with no complications and amazing success. In fact, only 3-6% of those who have undergone the procedure have reported any long term complications associated with it, making safe laser eye surgery what most people have come to expect. But in order to really ensure your safety when it comes to laser eye surgery it is imperative to act as an advocate for yourself and take the steps necessary to protect your health and your eyesight.
Laser eye surgery utilizes laser technology to resurface the cornea - the thin, transparent covering of the eye. During the procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision in the top layer of the cornea in order to create a flap. Once the flap is folded back the mid-section of the cornea is revealed and the surgeon can then use a low-powered laser to resurface the cornea - clearing the way in which light is refracted in our eye and thus improving vision.
The patient's eye is numbed the entire time during the procedure and most who have undergone laser eye surgery report little to no pain associated with the procedure. Nonetheless, there is risk associated with every surgery. And when it comes to laser technology used in and around the eye, it is absolutely imperative to ensure that you are working with skilled and reputable surgeons and a surgery center that is committed to patient care through safe laser eye surgery.
The burden of finding this information is up to you - the patient - but is well-worth the time it will take to ensure a positive experience. Begin your search for safe laser eye surgery by researching the laser eye surgery centers in and around your area. Talk to friends and family who have undergone the procedure to assess their experience; and get recommendations from your general eye doctor and even your primary care physician. Recommendations are key to narrowing your search for a reputable surgery center.
Once you have narrowed your search through recommendations it is crucial that you conduct your own research by examining each surgery center's history, surgical and patient care philosophy, reputation in the industry, and financial options that will be available to you. Follow-up this research by visiting the surgery centers yourself to assess cleanliness of the facility, professionalism of the office and medical support staff, and commitment to safe laser eye surgery through the level of technology being used.
Finally, meet with the surgeon who would perform your procedure to determine his/her experience and strategy for patient care and safety procedures. Any surgeon in which you are interested should perform laser eye surgery on a daily basis and have an overall dedication to safe laser eye surgery and successful results.

The Importance Of A Reputable Lasik Eye Surgery Center

by J. Lloyd

For anyone considering Lasik eye surgery, the importance of finding a reputable and experienced Lasik eye surgery center is absolutely crucial. Just as you would never embark on a surgical procedure with doctors that you didn't know or trust, you should never entrust the health of your eyesight to random surgeons you find in the yellow pages of the phone book.
In order to get what you need from Lasik surgery - in a safe and effective way - you must find a surgical center that extends quality, dependability, experience, and professionalism to their patients - at all times.
Lasik eye surgery - for the uninitiated - is a refractive procedure that works to correct the way in which our eyes refract light. When light is captured by the lens of our eye - the portion of the eye located directly behind the iris, or colored part of the eye - the lens refracts, or bends, the light to be then captured by the retina, a group of cells in the lining in the back of the eye.
The retina then takes those light signals and converts them into messages that can be understood by the optic nerve in our brain. When there are refractive difficulties in our eyes - through nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism - the light is not refracted to the retina properly and the brain receives a message of a blurry image.
During the Lasik procedure, a laser is used to resurface the cornea - the thin, transparent covering that blankets the iris and lens of the eye - thus clearing the way for refractive clarity. Lasik is generally a painless procedure that can be performed in mere minutes. Skilled surgeons who work within a Lasik eye surgery center and perform this procedure on a daily basis are in the best position to assess your candidacy for the procedure and what will work best for your eyesight.
Begin your search for a Lasik eye surgery center by looking in your immediate area; logistical convenience should be your first consideration but it shouldn't be your only one. Speak to people who have had the procedure performed in your area in order to get a sense for the more popular and reputable surgery centers.
If you are interested in a particular Lasik eye surgery center, then speak to patients who have had the procedure performed in that center and who are willing to share their experience. Finally, visit the centers in which you are interested to assess their organization, patient care including pre-operative and post-operative care, cleanliness, professionalism of the staff, and financial options available to you.
Once you have decided on a Lasik eye surgery center it is important to then research the surgeons who work within the center and who will be assigned to your case. With the assistance of the Internet it does not take very long to investigate the education, experience, and reputation of any surgeon in which you are interested. Meet with the surgeon yourself to get a feel for his/her standard of care and what systems they put into place to ensure your comfort and successful outcome.

Hey San Diego, Cosmetic Surgery on Your Mind?

by Michele Ellingsen

If you've begun to consider cosmetic surgery, you're certainly not alone. Every year, millions of people worldwide have elective cosmetic surgery or related "non-invasive" cosmetic procedures to enhance their appearance and boost self-esteem.
Article:
Once upon a time, it seems only Hollywood stars or exceedingly wealthy, pampered egoists ever even thought about enhancing their physical appearance through cosmetic surgery - but that's far from the case, today. Here in the 21st Century, excellent cosmetic surgery is so readily and affordably available that it's the rare person who hasn't considered a little "nip" here or "tuck" there to correct minor physical flaws.
You may wonder whether you're thinking about cosmetic surgery because of a personal preference to improve some physical trait, or because social pressure is making you feel somehow inadequate. Often both issues motivate the decision.
Consider the following patient stories - have you ever felt about some aspect of your body the way these people felt?
Roger, a handsome businessman, didn't like the toll gravity and aging were taking on his body. The wrinkles and loose skin weren't in sync with his youthful mental outlook. Like most boomers, he's enjoying longer life expectancy and embracing an active lifestyle. Roger's neck bothered him the most so he had a neck lift and eliminated his "turkey waddle".
Cheri and Ruth are dear friends who do everything together. During one trip to the mall, they discovered that each one had her own "little black dress issue." Cheri's skirt glided perfectly over her tall, thin frame but she didn't fill out the top the way she wanted. Ruth filled out the top just fine, but she felt the skirt was too tight over her hips and thighs. Their solution turned out to be a breast enlargement for Cheri and a tummy tuck and liposuction for Ruth. Can guess how they celebrated after surgery? With anothertrip to the mall, of course, to outfit their new, improved bodies.
Mary said, "I haven't worn a swim suit since thirty pounds ago." You may dread the approach of summer, too - no shorts, no bathing suits, no tank tops - which means no poolside frolics, no beach vacations, no Caribbean cruises.... The list goes on and on. Mary decided to take action. She combined dieting and liposuction to get herself in shipshape condition for a fun-filled summer.
Susan's reaction to her high school class reunion invitation was, "Ohmygod, I can't go looking like this!" Instead of tossing the invitation, Susan used the event as a catalyst for the facial rejuvenation surgery she'd been thinking about for years. She went to her reunion with a bounce in her step and her head heldhigh and looking mighty fine.
Maggie looked at pictures of herself and cringed. She saw someone who looked worried, tired and angry - none of which reflected how she really felt inside. Maggie opted for eyelid surgery to her upper and lower eyes, had her forehead treated with Botox and then declared, "I'm getting a portrait taken on my sixtieth birthday."
Brian, a high school senior, came in with his mother saying that his protruding ears had bothered him for years. He had an ear pining procedure called otoplasty and went off to college feeling more confident and self-assured.
We've all heard that the only constant in life is change - and life changes may be why you are considering cosmetic surgery. Sally's upcoming marriage prompted her to get the breast augmentation she'd wanted for years. Mike's divorce motivated him to have the "nose job" he'd always wanted - and now his picture on an internet dating site shows him at his new best.
Eileen, like many of her thirty-something friends, was finished with pregnancies and was ready to reclaim her curvaceous past. After a tummy tuck and breast lift, she's off to soccer games feelin' mighty fine. Her husband, Jeff, wanted to turn his own clock back. He was sick of having "love handles" and since exercise didn't do the trick, he opted for liposuction.
If you can relate to any of these stories about what motivated cosmetic surgery in a handful of patients, you might be a prime candidate for a procedure, yourself. However, cosmetic surgery is a serious decision so always bear in mind important factors such as your health and general well-being, and choose a qualified, experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and options.
To find a surgeon in your area we recommend that you locate a surgeon who is a member of one of the following societies: ASPS - American Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASAPS - The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Surgeons in these organizations have been are board-certified in the ABMS(American Board of Medical Specialties) member board of Plastic Surgery. This assures you, the patient, that the doctor is fully trained in plastic surgery procedures.

Small Business SuitePlastic - Surgery Sites Struggle Despite Significant Benefits

by Dan Morse

Compared with selling, say, sofas over the Internet, flogging plastic surgery online makes perfect sense.
After all, privacy is one of the few proven ways to make money on the Web. Just consider the options facing someone thinking about a face-lift:
One: Schlep down to the nearest surgeon, and ask a complete stranger to illustrate how you would look with upgraded parts.
Two: Stay home (or stay at the office). Log onto the Internet and download "morphing" software. Then, scan in a picture of yourself and point-and-click your way to a new you. The Web site will then direct you to a local physician.
The latter option renders shopping for plastic surgery less embarrassing. Only if you are pleased with what you would look like do you go talk to strangers -- no doubt in a more confident state.
So why are so many plastic-surgery Web sites gasping for life?
There are lots of reasons. Some are specific to the companies' bad decisions, and others are general to the malaise of all things dot-com. In the end, one or two major players will likely remain standing. So they are racing to amass online directories of as many of the nation's 6,000 certified plastic surgeons as they can enroll. The sites typically charge doctors for the listings or charge consumers for the financing plans they manage.
Perhaps the most aggressive site is thatlook.com (www.thatlook.com), based in Stroudsburg, Pa. Web site viewers are hit with this offer: "Cosmetic surgery for no money down and payments as low as $38 a week." On either side of that pitch are two perfect models, male and female, whose images suggest recent visits to some rather skilled surgeons.
If only more people would see the site, laments Gerard Powell, chief executive of the company. "People don't know about it," says Mr. Powell, who candidly admits he has made some mistakes along the way. His company sponsored two Nascar races this year: the thatlook.com 300, a stock-car race, and the thatlook.com 200, a pickup-truck race. There weren't many female viewers. And even if they were watching, the TV announcers didn't spend much time explaining what thatlook.com actually does. For the company, the cost of the sponsorships was valued at $252,000, representing 2 1/2 months of the company's advertising budget, yet the races only generated three new patients, Mr. Powell says. Mr. Powell's Web site offers free software that consumers can download. That is what Melanie Solomon, a Missouri mother of two, did earlier this year. "I knew I wanted larger [breasts]. But I wasn't exactly sure" what size, she says. So, sitting in her home with husband Christopher, she scanned in a topless picture of herself. Then she morphed her way to D-cup from B-cup. Ms. Solomon was able to keep the images securely on her own computer.
She got her surgery done at the Plastic Surgery Aesthetic Center outside Kansas City. There, patient counselor Carla Casey-Smith says the Internet-available morphing can help people get over the hump. "The worst part of the whole thing is coming in and talking to a doctor," she says. She cautions that the software should explain to users that it is only a guide, and there are limitations to what can be done. That said, she asserts, if the sites were more widely used, plastic-surgery operations could "go through the ceiling."
For now, though, thatlook.com needs financing -- $2 million to $5 million for advertising in order to turn a profit, Mr. Powell says. He charges plastic surgeons $2,500 to $10,000 a month to have thatlook.com manage all their marketing efforts.

Others in the industry say Mr. Powell is charging plastic surgeons too much. "Physicians are cheap," says Elliott Jenkins, iEnhance.com's chief financial officer, of Salt Lake City. His company has linked with McGhan Medical Corp., a unit of Inamed Corp., which makes saline breast implants. If a doctor's office pays $950 annually to iEnhance.com (www.ienhance.com) (which gets them a posting on the Internet), the doctor essentially gets reimbursed by McGhan Medical, according to both iEnhance and McGhan.
IEnhance.com expects to post a $2 million loss this year on revenue of $1.1 million to $1.3 million, Mr. Jenkins says. The company received $4 million in venture funding, of which $1.5 million remains, he adds. Mr. Jenkins says their "low-cost provider" concept will work, and he expects to turn a profit next year. IEnhance boasts 1,400 doctors on its site, which is far more than its competitors, he says.
Meantime, eBody.com (www.eBody.com), in Minneapolis, raised about $5 million in financing, but has fallen on tough times -- shelving plans for an initial public offering and slashing staff. Dr. Scott Ross, the company's founder, says with all the competition, "We're all banging heads against each other." Last week, Dr. Ross, who is still with eBody, stated that his company is forming "strategic partnerships" and added: "If the price is right, everything is for sale, and eBody is no exception."
In addition to these sites, many doctor's offices have posted their own Internet sites, albeit usually less snazzy. A Google.com search for "plastic surgery and financing" yielded 8,760 hits. And one more big player: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, based in Arlington Heights, Ill., which runs an Internet-referral service (www.plasticsurgery.org). This site is relatively subdued and doesn't offer any of the financing hooks.
By comparison, some of the private sites make some doctors squeamish -- a factor working against the sites. There is even one in California, bidforsurgery.com (www.bidforsurgery.com), which follows an eBay model. In general, critics say that aggressive, online medical sites promote the cheapest doctors, not the most qualified. And this is surgery, after all.
Some of the Web sites have further hurt their reputation by steering consumers to certain doctors, says Brian Mullaney, who launched PersonalSurgeon.com (www.personalsurgeon.com) two months ago in New York. At his own site, he says, "We don't push any [certain] doctors."
To attract doctors, he offers free online postings, but plans to start charging next year. To attract consumers, PersonalSurgeon.com has placed full-page ads in The New York Times. PersonalSurgeon.com offers consumers before-and-after morphing. Consumers send in a picture (either traditional pictures or electronic ones). The company produces a rendering of how the patient might look. Mr. Mullaney shrugs off the slowdown in the tech sector, saying it presents an opportunity to hire Web site designers and computer-savvy people: "It's a buyer's market for talent."
